Hazardous Materials Technician certification class
Five Kingman Firefighters recently completed a five week Hazardous Materials Technician certification class sponsored by the Arizona Office of Emergency Management. The class was comprised of 29 firefighters from various Mohave County Fire Departments. Kingman Firefighter Willie Nelson received special recognition for having the highest score on the class final exam. The class was taught by various instructors from throughout the state including Kingman Fire Department personnel. The location of the class was rotated between Lake Havasu, Bullhead City and Kingman.

The intensive five week class included sections on chemistry, recognition and identification of hazardous materials, related computer software, detection and metering devices, personnel protective equipment, incident command, decontamination, mitigation and control, drug labs, weapons of mass destruction and practical exercises and drills. Twenty four KFD personnel have completed the training and are the core of KFD's Hazardous Materials Response Team. Kingman Fire Department participates in the concept of regional hazardous materials response on major incidents with Lake Havasu Fire, and the Bullhead City Fire Department.

Proposed new Fire Station 2, to be located at the corner of Andy Devine Ave. and Fairgrounds Blvd.  Presently in the design phase, this station will be the first Battalion Headquarters station built in Kingman.  It will be designed to serve the City for 50 + years and will be able to house 3 Engine Companies and 1 Ladder Company, plus the Battalion Chiefs.
 

Safety Tips

The Kingman Fire Department offers the following basic Fire Safety Tips:

• Install and maintain smoke detectors; the minimum requirements are to have one installed in each sleeping room, and at a point centrally located in access corridors to each sleeping area.

• Remember to test and clean your detectors one a month and change your batteries at least once a year.

• Know two ways out of every room such as a door and a window, practice fire escape drills with your family. Some family members may need assistance escaping such as infants or the elderly, plan in advance so you and your family will know what to do if a fire strikes. Determine an outside meeting place, and make sure everyone is familiar with its location. Remember never go back inside of a house that is on fire once you are outside.

• Time is your enemy in a fire, you must get outside fast. Smoke is a killer, remember to crawl low in smoke.
