The City of Kingman Building Department reviews applications for residential, commercial, industrial and institutional building permits. Demolition and Soil Grading permit application reviews are also accepted and coordinated through the building department. Requirements for these applications are listed below.

When is a Building Permit Required?

Whenever a building or structure is erected, constructed, enlarged, altered, moved, improved, removed, converted or demolished, a building permit must first be obtained from the Building Official! The following list does NOT require a building permit:

1)  A single story detached accessory building used as a tool & storage shed, play house or similar use provided that the floor area does not exceed 120 square feet.

2)  Fences not over 6 feet high.

3)  Oil derricks.

4)  Moveable cases, counters and partitions not over 5 feet 9 inches high.

5)  Retaining walls not over 4 feet in height, measured from the bottom of the footing.

6)  Water tanks supported directly upon grade if the capacity does not exceed 5,000 gallons, and the ratio of height to diameter or width does not exceed 2:1.

7)  Platforms, walks and driveways not more than 30 inches above grade and not over any basement or story below.

8)  Painting, papering and similar finish work.

9)  Temporary motion picture, television stage sets and scenery.

10)  Window awnings supported by an exterior wall of a private residence or garage (Group R, Division 3, and Group U occupancies) when projecting not more than 54 inches.
