.:: Councilwoman Robin Gordon ::.
regordon@cityofkingman.gov
Robin Gordon was born in San Diego, California, and raised in several towns in California. She moved to Kingman, Arizona in 1978 and began a career with Citizens Communications (now Frontier), where she held various positions. Her last assignment with Citizens was in the marketing department, where she was in charge of a team analyzing new properties that the company was considering purchasing. At the end of that assignment, rather than transfer to Rochester, New York, where Frontier had relocated its marketing department, she chose to stay in Kingman. She and her husband now run a small business called Transerv Transportation.
Her education includes numerous technical courses, including the Public Utilities Guide, and she is a graduate of Mohave Community College with a degree in applied technologies.
Robin has been active in the community for many years, serving on the City of Kingman Cultural Arts Commission, Mohave Community College Performing Arts Committee, Project Chair of Heritage Crossroads (committee of the Kingman Chamber of Commerce), and City of Kingman Economic Development Strategic Plan Technical Advisory Committee.
She is the proud mother of Shane and Krystal and the even more proud grandmother of Kinsley and Dereck. She hopes to help make Kingman, their home and hers, a better place.
Robin feels that Kingman has so much potential with its location and friendly, small-town feel. She thinks that with good leadership and open government, much can be accomplished. She has some personal priorities for Kingman, among which are
-
Making downtown the soul of our community and an asset to our city.
-
Working to annex North Kingman, which is important to increase our city’s population and thus attract a variety of businesses, but most of all to unite our city.
-
Bringing city residents together to work for what’s best for the community as a whole.
.:: Councilman Ray Lyons ::.
rlyons@cityofkingman.gov
Ray Lyons was sworn in and seated June 3, 2002 as one of the two new Council Members for the City of Kingman.
Ray hails from the Dubuque, and Davenport, Iowa area. But he admits, he always wanted to live in Arizona. When ABF Freight Systems offered to transfer him here in 1979, Ray and his wife of 36 years, Sandra, jumped at the chance. Their three children were raised here and went through the Kingman school system. Jeff, Stacy and Ashli all completed college and have since entered successful professions of their own.
Ray retired from ABF one and a half years ago, after 33 years with the company. Now he is pursuing other interests in life. He is President of the Kingman Democratic Club, Deputy Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, and a member of the Teamsters, Eagles, Foresters, plus he and Sandra volunteer on the K.R.M.C. hospital auxiliary. His primary goal for years, though, is that he has wanted to be a part of the city council. However, his time on the road with
ABF never allowed pursuit of this interest. After retirement, Ray worked hard to get elected by knocking on doors, participating in forums and talking to people at every opportunity.
The extra work paid off and now Ray finds himself as one of the two newest council members. Ray expressed some definite ideas of what he would like council to address over the next four years. The first priority council should address, in Ray’s opinion, is annexation of the Butler (North Kingman) area. He feels this has been put off way too long and Kingman cannot afford to ignore the issue any more. While annexation will cost approximately $3 mil, it has to be done. The longer we wait, the more expensive the process will become. Ray feels the annexation costs can be recovered by the additional shared revenue and grants based on the increased population base, plus the resulting increase in new businesses. If necessary, a property and/or sales tax could be initiated. Annexation will be a “real bargain” for the Butler residents” as it will lower their tax rate and provide more public services.
Ray would like to make Kingman a better place to live. “We need more shopping, restaurants and higher paying jobs. Businesses say they locate here because of the interstate highway and railway access; but it’s because of the cheap labor.” We need businesses located in Kingman that are willing to pay a livable wage.
Kingman also needs a draw for locals and tourists alike. Ray envisions downtown Kingman as a tourist area by closing a portion of Beale between Fourth and Fifth Street and designing a plaza area with kiosks, entertainment, quaint shops etc. “Block parties could be held on a regular basis instead of occasionally.” To create a tourism attraction, Kingman needs to be more cognizant of what land is designated for what use. For instance, a hotel or restaurant, or shopping area directed toward tourism would be more inviting to tourists than a prison or court house at the entrance to town. “Another thought Kingman should consider is a small event center to host small conventions in the Kingman area.” Kingman is in close proximity to several tourist attractions and could benefit greatly by housing conventions.
With the increased traffic congestion on our roads, Ray proposed an alleviation at Louise Ave. by locating an underpass at Harrison Ave. as opposed to the proposed Airway Ave. location. The Harrison location would be more centrally located and would allow closure of the dangerous Louise Ave. crossing.
Ray’s comments to you— “I would like to see the citizens band together to unite with the Butler/North Kingman area so that we can reap the benefits of the expanded population base. I feel it would be a big improvement. Annexation should have been done at least ten years ago. If we can get it done now, I will feel like we have accomplished something.”
